Thiensville Milling Site FAQ
Thank you for stopping by! We’re so excited by all the interest we’ve had in our mill & project! While we would love to talk to everyone and answer all your questions, we have to keep at it so we can get our project done with the time we have been given by the Village of Thiensville. Please read through the list of FAQs below, and if your question isn’t listed, feel free to give us a call or shoot us an email! Thank you!
Q: What are you guys all doing?
A: We are using this lot as a temporary milling site for a traditional timber framed building that will be a commercial restaurant in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. We are doing all the milling and joinery for the project on the site in Thiensville, and will then erect and finish out the building on the final site in Cedarburg. More information on the project to come very soon! :)
Q: What type of sawmill do you have?
A: We have a portable D&L Swingblade 1020 sawmill. The blade can alternate between cutting vertically and horizontally without having to rotate the logs which is a huge time saver. It’s pretty dang nifty!
Q: Where did all the logs come from?
A: The big pile of logs closest to the road is a mix of locust, maple, and ash, all purchased from the City of Cedarburg. We have a pile of very long spruce trees (on the north side) that are all from a lot that was cleared near Sendik’s in Grafton. The majority of the trees are white pine that are from Marinette County. Those were purchased from a logging company that delivered all of the logs.
Q: Do you have a logging truck?
A: No, we do not. All the wood that is on site has been transported by giant trucks and/or logging trucks.
Q: How long will you be at the milling site?
A: We received a temporary use permit that expires April 2024 and will need to be reapplied for should we need more time.
Q: Can you mill any wood for me?
A: As mentioned above, since our temporary use permit expires in April of 2024, it is our priority to finish off this project first before we can commit to milling wood for other people at this point in time. You are more than welcome to reach out, but we will not be able to take on any jobs until we relocate to a more permanent spot.
Additionally, please consider that you will be responsible for transporting your logs to us as we do not have the logging trucks or machinery necessary for doing so. While our sawmill is portable, we would only consider setting up the sawmill for a sizable amount of logs at a set location at this point in time.
Q: What are you doing with the shavings/scrap wood/etc?
A: The shavings have all been spoken for, but we will have a lot of scrap white pine at the end of the project. We will either be chipping it or giving it away, so if you would like any please let us know.
Q: Will you take/buy my logs?
A: If you have the means to get your logs to the property, we would be open to having a discussion! We are looking for logs at least 10’ long and 30’ in diameter at breast height with minimal taper and mostly straight.
Q: I have some dead ash trees. If you cut them down, you can have them!
A: While we would LOVE to see these beautiful ash trees put to a better use than firewood, we unfortunately don’t have the time to go around and cut them down for you! As of now, we also lack the means of transporting said logs. If anything changes we will let you know and update that on the page here.
